Penelope Cruz Sanchez was the daughter
of Eduardo Cruz (a retailer) and Encarna Sanchez (a hairdresser). She was an
obsessive performer when she was a kid and often reenacted TV commercials for
family amusement. However, she decided to concentrate her energy on dance. She

Your Eyes (1997), a huge hit in Spain that earned eight Goyas (though none for
Cruz). In 1998, her luck changed when she took home the best Actress Goya for
the movie industry comedy La Nina De Tus Ojos (1998). After a few more attempts
at film in the English language, Cruz's first international success was in
Almodovar's All About My Mother (1999) in which she played the unchaste and
well-meaning nun. Cruz was in hot demand in both the Atlantic and west coast,
since the film won numerous awards and honors. Woman on Top (2000) was her next
